The quality of your thinking equals the quality of your research

Lab Culture

The culture within our lab revolves around scholarship, mindfulness, teamwork, and communication. Scholarship forms the bedrock, enabling us to identify crucial and intriguing questions to address. In terms of teamwork, we foster an environment of cooperation, collaboration, and camaraderie. Regarding scientific mindfulness, we acknowledge that the caliber of our thinking (and preparation) directly influences the quality of our research.

Mentorship

The mentoring style in our lab aims to guide graduate students in cultivating a mindset that embraces curiosity, unforeseen challenges, resilience, and scientific rigor. Indeed, the quality of a student's thinking is fundamental to the quality of their achievements. Additionally, our objective is to mentor students in the importance of being thorough in sample preparation, data collection and analysis, and maintaining a highly detailed lab notebook. We also mentor students in their career pursuits, whether in academia, industry, or other domains while encouraging them to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Expectations

In our lab, we expect students to transform into "intellectual heavy lifters." Only through scholarly pursuits can a student attain intellectual independence and become an inspired scientist. Another crucial expectation is for students to cultivate mindfulness, foresightedness, thoroughness, and preparedness in their scientific endeavors. A very well-documented lab notebook is another important expectation: if it wasn't well documented in the notebook, it never happened. We also expect each member of the group to maintain a high level of lab cleanliness, safety, and professionalism. A significant milestone is reached when a student begins to exude these qualities, indicating that they are well on their way to becoming a successful, productive, and competitive scientist, with a strong likelihood of achieving their academic goals.
